CARGO BROACHING.

TEMPTATION OF THIRSTY SEAMEN. AUCKLAND. August 13. Yesterday Constables Gourlay and Nixon arrested Wm. Price and Win. Huekle, quartermasters on the Delphic, and Arthur Burrell, an A. 13., on a charge of cargobroaching. They came before Air F, V. Fraser, S.M., this morning, and admitted the theft. Air J. R. Lundon, who appeared for them, said that Price had 26 years’ first-class discharges, and Huekle had 16 years’ firstclass discharges, while all Burrell’s discharges wore first-class. When the three got shore leave on the day previous to the theft, the captain refused to supply them with money, and they returned with only sufficient drink to create a further thirst. The knowledge that whisky was in the hold, and that the hatch cover was not securely locked, caused them to yield to temptation. His Worship said that it was a salutary rule of the court never to deal with cargobroaching by merely inflicting a fine. lie would take into account that the men had good records, and that they had freely confessed, and lie would also give consideration to the attraction of whisky for thirsty seamen. Accused would bo convicted and sentenced to 14 days’ hard labour.
