AUCKLAND TOPICS.

By Taiuoa

• August 16. Tlio speedy Glenlapp filly Waiorewa, who has had a lengthy spell, has again been taken in hand by E. J. Rae, and she v ill be placed in steady work in a day or two. The refusal of the A.R.C. to renew the licenses of three prominent local jockeys and one trainer has caused quite a sensation at Ellerslie.

Antiphone hits quite recovered from his recent sickness, and the big bay is now getting through light exercise. Monarch, the half-brother to Jack Dclaval, is being allotted useful work. On Tuesday he ran half a mile in 55scc, but is not nearly ready yet.

F. Ross is keeping his team at Lake Takapuna. Frank is putting a three-year-old by Soultma—Pauline through her facings. F. M'Manemin is getting Monoline ready for Avondale. The little daughter of Zvlonoform sprinted four furlongs in 54 l-ssec the other morning, but was not doing her best.

Merry Roc just played with Self over a round on the sand on Tuesday. The pairfinished together in 2min 3scc, but Merry Roc had her head turned towards the grand stand. The flighty little Mulligar is one of the most forward of the Ellerslie two-year-olds, and on Tuesday ran a very fine half-mile on the sand.

0. Coleman is allotting useful work to Brookfield. The half-brother to Sedition is rapidly rounding into condition, but it may not be till later in the season that he will be seen to advantage. Troy, a fine-looking two-year-old in F. Stonning’s stable, is hardly as forward as others training of the same ago. Ho should bo seen to advantage about November. The two-year-old by Motiti —Jewellery who joined F. M'Maneman’s string last week is very racy-looking. J. Williamson has recommissioned Royal Irish. Built on the small side, the b'aok son of Soult is nevertheless useful when the opposition is not particularly, strong. A chestnut two-year-old by Obligado— Merry Soult is being put through her facings by A. French. Silver Mane, the filly in = quostion, will carry the colours of that good sportsman Mr W. Handley. The fine-looking two-year-old Crescendo, a sister to Poicticrs, is doing nicely, and alrearly she "is being selected as a 1 kely winner of the Avondale Stakes. She moves nicely, but a better idea of her chance can be gathered during the next week or two, when she will bo seen hurrying up on A gelding by Bombardo has made his appearance, at Ellerslie. He is named Chance Shoot, and is the property of Mr J. Farnworth. who recently raced Master Jack at Mangorc. H Barr is said to have a promising sort in Miss Avalanche. She is the property of Mr Hanson, who owned Avalanche, the clam of the filly now being prepared by Barr The hurdler Poiotiere. who ran second to Pip at the northern meeting, has left R. Hannan’s etablo, and ■will in future be trained by F. Loomb. With experience, Poictiere should turn out well, providing all goes well in the- interim. It is difficult to see anything locally trained to beat Merry Roc in the Avondale Guineas. She will bo much more forward than her opponents, and so far, at any rate, has most pace. Sesame, a horse by Torpedo—Lady Hart,

has gone into D. Moraghan’s stable. lie is very much in the rough yet. Tact is not doing fast sprinting yet. 'lhe speedy mare looks well, and she should be at her best later in the season.

Besides Worcester and the Cyrona two-year-old, H. French is exercising Opposition, a gelding by Obligado. This fellow is said to bo very fast, but he appears to be a bit mad-headed.

Mark .Ryan has taken in hand a gelding by Muskcrdale. The same trainer has Extractor doing well, but still requiring a lot of work before ho is ready to show his best pace. H. Tobin, who has Flying Soult, has taken Nu'kuatu in hand. This chestnut has shown pace at times in private, but does not appear to be much good with the colours up P. Bray is getting Soldier ready at Kohirmarama. This is a fine colt, and, though ho failed to win a race last season, ho showed heaps of pace. Colonel Soult is not being asked to do anything brilliant, but what he is doing he is doing well. He should not be long in breaking h : s maiden status. The filly Solitude, who' has not raced for some time, is- being hacked alxuit/ by E. Pope.

D. Legate is doing, useful exercise with a view to contesting cross-country events in tho near future.

Mcrrimax is looking bright and well, and it would take very little work to put him into racing condition.

Heyboy is said to be making good progress under the supervision of F. Ross at Lake Takapuna. The horse has been a disapnointment so far, but he may turn out well with age.

.Lady Alicia is .ookmj> and moving well, and she promises to be very forward when the season opens. The Avondale course will suit the Obligado fi’lv down to tho ground, as she is a very brilliant beginner. Cloudy Dawn is not being bustled by E. Pone, and the big horse will not bo scon raring for some time. W. Cunningham, who recently took Lucille to Australia, is reported to have disposed of the daughter of Soult.
