MATERNTTY HOSPITALS.
MINISTERIAL STATEMENT. From Our Own Correspondent.)
WELLINGTON, August 13. The Hon. R. H. Rhodes (Ministcr-in-('barge of Hospitals) stated to-day in reply to Mr Poland that the question of establidiiiie maternity hospitals in all towns with a population of 5000 or over by the Hospitals Department had not been considered advisable, but it had been recommended that in the provincial towns in country districts the Hospital Boards should establish maternity wards, which would be partly supported by tho subsidies given by the Government. In tho four chief centres provision was already made in the State Maternity Hospitals. The question of affording free treatment to tho wives of men earning not more than 10s per day had not been considered, but such treatment. including medical and nursing attention, was provided at a low charge in tho State Maternity Hospitals. Tho Hospital Boards that established maternity wards with tho assistance of Government subsidies would no doubt grant similar facilities in such cases.
