A TRYING EXPERIENCE.
WELLINGTON August 15,
Considerable excitement and alarm was caused on the steamer Aorangi, which, arrived from San Francisco this afternoon. When the vessel was' about three and a-half days’ sail from Tahiti an ordinary seaman named Funnel, while working on one of the ship’s boats, fell overboard. Ho at once disappeared from the view of those on board, so it was decided to circle round for some time. Vigilant search was made of the locality, and the steamer eventually returned to the scene of the occurrence. The voice of the man calling for assistance was heard, and the Aorangi steamed about a mile and a-half and succeeded in picking Funnel up. The rescued man, who is considered to bo one of the strongest swimmers on board, had been in the water’ for about three hours and a-half before being recovered. It was found that he was little the worse for his trying experience.
