SMALLPOX IN AUSTRALIA.
FOOTBALLERS AFFECTED
SYDNEY, August 12. Seven cases of smallpox were reported to-day. August 13. Seven cases of smallpox were reported to-day, including a member of the League team chosen to visit New Zealand. August 14. Only two cases of smallpox were reported to-day—the lowest record since the outbreak of the disease. August 15. j Six cases of smallpox were reported today. There is also a suspicious case at Balranald. Four seamen on the' steamer Devon were sentenced to a fortnight’s imprisonment to-day for refusing to get vaccinated. ‘ The captain explained that unless the men were vaccinated or discharged the vessel would be unable to get a clearance. August 17. Seven smallpox oases were . reported on Saturday, including a policeman. The week’s patients include a schoolboy from St. Joseph’s College at Hunter's Hill. The building and grounds have been quarantined. Thirteen cases of smallpox were re- , ported in the metropolitan area to-day. ( including the wife of a coachman employed at “ Cranbrook,” the State Government House. She resides with her husband and son on Cranbrook estate. She postponed vaccination, although all the others there, including the Governor, i were vaccinated some time ago The total number of • cases reported in • Sydney since the outbreak is 499. August 18. There has been a recrudescence of the smallpox epidemic during the last few 1 days. Twelve cases were discovered today. Sixty-seven patients are now in quarantine, with 173 convalescents. Four suspicious cases have been reported from different country districts, including a shearer at Balranald, who is a Victorian and who has never been in Sydney. j BRISBANE, August 17. ! All the contacts have been released from quarantine, leaving only two patients, who are nearly well. August 18. Suspicious cases at Townsville and Croydon have been proved not to bo smallpox.
