THE TARIFF DEBATE. WASHINGTON, August 13. The Senate is discussing the Tariff Bill. It lias approved of the imposition of a graduated income tax on tobacco production, and has placed cattle and sheep on the free list. August 16. ©wing to the slow progress being made it is predicted that the Bill will not be passed till November. August 17. The Republican amendments to the Tariff Bill seeking to raise tbe rates on fish, fruits, straw, and apples were defeated. The sugar schedule is the next item for consideration, and a bitter fight anticipated. A NEW SENATOR. WASHINGTON, August 16. The Alabama Legislature has appointed Mr Henry Clayton a Senator, thus bringing the Democratic ranks up to the former majority. A fight is likely on the floor of the Senate before Mr Clayton takes his seat.
