CAREER OF FRAUD
PARIS, August 8. The German Hermann alias Crauss was sentenced to 20 years’ imprisonment for arson at Nancy. In order to secure the insurance money he perpetrated many frauds in Europe and America. He deserted his wife at Munich, and fled to England, where, in the guise of a Russian prince, he married another woman. He squandered this woman’s fortune, and then practised as a doctor in the United States, where he again married, and scattered the woman’s dowry. LONDON, August 8. Malinger Krauss, whose fainting fits puzzled the prison doctors of Europe and America, was sentenced at Nancy (France) to 20 years’ hard labour' for arson. When arrested Kremmerskothen had three of the false notes inside his socks, and letters to Baron Rothschild. He professed that ho came from a committee, and the letters stated that if the police were informed of a man demanding money or if he were arrested, Miss Alice Rothschild must die. Lord Rothschild, in his evidence, said he did not know the prisoner. Kremmerskothen made a full confession, and asked fur mercy.
The police trapped Kremmerskothen by placing no tee sprinkled with a staining powder on the wall of a restaurant. When he was arrested the prisoner’s hands were found to be stained with the powder. The accused has been committed for trial.
