WOMEN’S CHRISTIAN TEMPERANCE UNION.
The monthly meeting of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union was held on Tuesday, sth inst., in the Octagon Hall, Central Mission, the president (Mrs Peter Dick) being in the chair. Deep regret was expressed that, owing to continued ill-health, Mr A. R. Falconer had been compelled to resign his position as seamen’s missionary to the W.C.T.U. A letter accepting his resignation and expressing sympathy and appreciation of bis post services was sent to Mr Falconer. Mrs A. C. Begg, who was the first superintendent of tho Sailor’s Rest, spoke feelingly of the loving Christian services rendered for so many years by Mr Falconer, and hoped that ho would still he spared to continue lii.s labour of love among tho seamen. The offer of tho Christian workers to carry on tho work at the Rest in the meantime, under the direction of the W.C.T.U., was gratefully accepted. The 29th of July was mentioned as memorial day for the late Mr T. E. Taylor, who is remembered with gratitude for bis great work in tho temperance cause. Mrs Gain (superintendent of the Bands of Hope) reported that the late competitions were an unqualified success. ho number of entries was larger than in the preceding years, and tho committee was pleased to report a balance in hand. The President read a pamphlet on ‘ The White Slave Traffic,” calling attention to tho fact that there were evidences that agents for ” the white slave traffic had begun th'ir work in Australia, and calling on the women of New Zealand to be cn their n-uard against the introduction of such an iniquitous traffic into our fair land.
