BOWLING.

HJVJ* All SillOAi A casual look round at a number of the greens in and about the city leaves behind the impression that if the weather is at all favourable an early start is likely to be made on most of them, and there is every probability that the playing surface on the majority of the greens will be better than in any previous season. Of course, all the bad weather is not over yet, but the work of preparation is so well forward that a good sole of grass may bo predicted. The approaching season promises to bo a particularly busy one. In addition to the first United Tournament being held in Dunedin, a visit from an Australian team appeal's to bo assured. Mr O. J. Payne has received a communication from Mr Wldtehou.se, of New South Wales, one of the committee which has {.ho matter in hand, asking for information on various points. Mr Payne, with the assistance of Mr Hanning, secretary of the New Zealand Bowling Association, has drawn up alternative itineraries, setting out ail information which may ho wanted as to the cost, time occupied, etc It is found tliat no tour that would lie satisfactory can be arranged for loss tiian five weeks from date of departure to date of return. As Mr Whitehouse has taken up the matter with Ida usual enthusiasm the visit will come off. If ho cannot get a representative Australian team ho has determined to make the tour with a strong New South Wales team.

No information has been received as to whether the centres affiliated to the New Zealand Bowling Association have met to make nominations to the council of the Amalgamated Association, or whether they will he content with ftio council nominated by the Dunedin centre. As the nominations have to bo in the hands of the secretary by the 11th inst, there is not much time to spare. Three new centres will be entitled to participate in the voting for the South Island members of the new council—namely, the Nelson and Marlborough centre, the West Coast centre, and the Otago Central centre. This brings the total number of centres in the south up to eight. The Outram Club’s annual smoke concert and presentation of prizes was held in tho Drill Hall on Friciliy evening, and was well attended. During tho evening musical items wore rendered by Messrs Strong. Walls, M’Bryde, Withers, Duff, Gregg (Dunedin), and MTvochnio. Tho following wore prizetakers:—Champion, Mr A. At the request of tho North-East Valley Club it was decided to set apart Labour Day for the match with that club at Bajclutha. Tho opening of the green was left in tho hands of the General Committee. Eleven now members wore elected. A discussion took place on the matter of collecting subscriptions, and it was decided to have a list of members posted in tho pavilion, and ns subscriptions were paid such, would be marked on tho list.
