A TEMPORARY STRIKE.
WORKING A POWDER CARGO. AUCKLAND, August 7.
Eight of tin- crew of the steamer Delphic remonstrated against being required to work it powder cargo at the British seamen’s rates of £5 per month, while the waterside workers are paid Is 5d per hour. In duo course waterside workers wore engaged by the captain, and eight of the crew were each fined 2Cs 2d, made up as follows: Wages eight waterside workers at 19s 5d each, launch hire £3 10s.
It is understood that the men hud no redress. hut the local waterside workers, hear ing of the incident, 'refused to work the Delphic’s cargo, and the vessel was idle all the morning.
The difficulty was overcome by the company agreeing to remit the fines and to expunge the record of same from the ship's log. The men resumed work at, 1 o’clock.
