SHORTAGE OF FOOD
AUCKLAND, August 9,
The Atua, from the Islands, brings news that the natives at Nukualofa and Tonga are very short of food. Owing to the recent hurricane the usual supplies of fruit failed almost entirely, and as there is no bread-fruit the natives are depending mainly on yams. Rut for the monthly steamer the position would be serious. The authorities are greatly concerned, fearing the introduction of the copra pest, called the rhinoceros fly. which is said to be in Samoa, and arc taking most rigorous precautions.
