“A BARBAROUS EXCRESCENCE” (From Our Own Correspondent.) WANGANUI, August 8. TLo tiiorny question of the toll gate, which lias vexed the minds of many Taranaki county councillors and caused u lot of illfeeling between the town and country, was revived at the meeting of the Eginont County Council. Mr Willeox, of Rahotu (whoso feelings apparently were rankled by the proximity of a toll gate, which in his opinion collects upwards of £2009 a year, a clear profit of £llOO over expenses), made a strong protest against the continued expense. Ho considered that Egmont, was penalised on all sides, and he moved that a protest be sent to the authorities in Wellington against the continued existence of toll gates. “They are a barbarous antiquated excrescence, and should be taken off every road,” he said.
