LABOUR DISPUTES
OFFER OF MEDIATION REFUSED. NEW YORK, July 30. Fifteen thousand copper miners at Calumet are on strike. The strikers refused the Governor’s offer to mediate, and serious rioting followed, many people being injured August 1. There is severe rioting among the strikers at Calumet. They attacked tha police when the latter entered a boardinghouse to arrest the ringleaders. The latter used hot water, pepper, household utensils, and revolvers. The militia, using their bayonets, finally suppressed the disturbance. Many were injured, and scores were arrested. HOP-PICKERS ON STRIKE. NEW YORK, August 4. Five companies of militia are ready to proceed to the wheat fields in the Yuba County, where 400 hop pickers rioted because their demands for higher wages were refused. The district attorney and two deputies were killed in a fight,and the sheriff, a constable, and several others were injured. FARRIERS’ STRIKE ENDED. SYDNEY, July 31. The farriers’ strike against the use of machine-made horseshoes has been settled after lasting several weeks.
