FAIRLIE (South Canterbury.)

July 30. —At present there is nothing of an exciting nature to write about. Fairli® is, if not daily, becoming more and moro populous, but it ie certain it lias gone about! timing the last few years. As an indication of th,* growth of trade the local railway traffic has been outstriding the department, judging by the periodical demands and requests made for extended facilities, and an augmentation to the staff. Some five years ago tile work of the station, including the | post and telegraph department labours, was successfully performed by the station postmaster, with one cadet and one messenger, whereas now th ( > railway work alone engages the full attention of a staff of five under our most uopular etatonmuster, Mr J. W. Smith. Mhe postal department has also made wonderful progress. Not five years ago the two departments were separated, and the private letter boxes numbered 20, only 14 of which were occupied, whereas no less than 160 are now in use. Four additions have been made to the post office, which was erected four years ago. M'ho last was completed a few weeks ago at a cost of about £SOO. Other substantia! buildings are in the course of erection, among which is a hospital—a imieh-fclt want.—and is due to the enterprise of the local medico. Dr Trail, Some months hack a move was made to form a private company to establish such, but the projected enterprise fell through; hence the doctor’s move. The Canterbury Co-operative Association of Timarn has established a branch of its extensive business in the township. It has a!.-o purchased several sections for the purposes of erecting grain and produce .-.tores, etc., in the near future. Motor Car Company.—The Fairlie-Mount Cook Motor Car Company has introduced into its business n four-ton 40 h.n. motor luggage van. All praise is due to the enterprise of the managing director (Mr R. Librarv. —The level-headed, widely-re-nowned financier Air A. Carnegie, after bis customary shrewd iiivestigat’on. has donated a liberal grant for the building of a public library. Settlement. Settlement continues apace; there is a lot yet to look forward to. As well as lacing progressive, we pre surely a practical community, n.nd should avail of every advantageous nroiect offerin'?, legislative or otherwise. The Land for Settlements Act. Workers’ Dwellings. Land Settlement F’nanee Act- have all been availed of. and now it e.nlv remain's for arm’’cations to cotnc forward, and workers’ homes allotment, too, will eventuate.
