August 2. —After two or three days of high wind a most welcome rain fell last Thursday. The farmers received it gladly, as the ground was exceedingly dry, but now farming operations are in full swing, and the district presents unite a springlike appearance, August indeed having come in like a iamb. Valedictory.—On Wednesday, July 30. a pleasant little function took place at the school, when parents and friends met lor the purpose of saying farewell to Miss A. West, lute junior assistant, and who has been appointed to the iiosiiioii of eighth assistant at the JJigh .Street School, Dunedin. Mr A. Tyndall, head master, in a felicitous speech, spoke of tnc love and esteem which always existed between Alisa West and the scholars, and presented her on behalf of the children with a .silvermounted hand-mirror and comb. Miss West suitably replied, and afternoon tea was served by the ladies. During the afternoon the children rendered several songs in a pleasing manner. Miss West was also the recipient of several presents from the members of the Anglican Church, with which she has been associated for the nast two years. The gifts consisted of a gold brooch, presented by Miss Gladys Williams from the Sunday school children, a handsomely bound Cathedral prayer-book from the members of tho choir, and a silver-mounted hairbrush from the congregation. jf j Post Office. —Tho local post office and
