The miners who are on strike at Charlestown (West Virginia) again came into conflict with the watchmen employed by the coal companies to protect the workings, and a pitched battle ensued. Four miners were shot dead. There is much rioting and bloodshed throughout the strike area. The United Mine Workers of America are conducting the strike, which is one of the bitterest ever experienced. July 27. The trouble has been settled, and the Niagara will sail for Auckland on Monday. DAY LABOUR v. CONTRACT. SYDNEY, July 26. A return compiled by the Chief Engineer of Railways shows that 404 miles of railway were constructed under the contract system at a cost of £4309 per mile, whereas 765 miles built by day labour cost only £3321 per mile. These figures are being used by Mr Griffiths in support of his contention that day labour is cheaper.
