THE DEADLY PEA RIFLE.

REMITS AT ACCLIMATISATION' CONFERENCE. [From Our Own Correspondent.) WELLINGTON, July 25. There were two remits on **tho order paper of the Acclimatisation Conference to-day dealing with the deadly pea nflo : (1) That the Government be requested to bring in legislation dealing with the Indiscriminate use of pea rifles, and that the use of silencers be absolutely prohibited; (2) that the Government be requested to impose a special licence of 5s on all persons carrying pea rifles, except those used under such conditions as may be deemed expedient. The second remit is the same as that passed by last year’s conference. There was much discussion on the usual lines made familiar by reports of earlier conferences. The President (Mr L. 0. 11. Tripp) said the Government would he disposed to look more favourably on the request for legislation since the telegraph and telephone insulators had become such a popular target, of the pea-rifle boy. The first remit was withdrawn, and an addition made to the second defining pea rifles as “ rifles of 25 calibre and under.” In this form the’ remit was adopted.
