BOXING.

CHAMPIONSHIP FIXTURES. July 30 and 31—-New Zealand Championships (Timaru). August 23 and 26. —Wairongoa Shield contest. Otago v. Canterbury, at Dunedin. S<iptember 22 and 23 —Suggested dates Australasian Championships at Dunedin. BY STRAIGHT LEFT. To-night and to morrow night the New Zealand amateur championships will be decided. The Otago men are all in good form, and will bo certain to give a good account of themselves. They left for Timaru on Tuesday morning, Mr D. Bannautync acting as manager. They were accompanied by Mr J. Isaacs, secretary of the Otago Association, who goes as delegate to the conference of associations. Mr Kilmartin also went up. Ho will act as judge in conjunction with Mr F. Burns, of Auckland. Mr F. Shaw was originally selected-, but owing to his inability to get away Mr Kilmartin was appointed as the second judge. Without desiring to detract from Mr Kiimartin’s ability, it seems unfortunate that Mr Shaw was unable to accept tho position offered him, as he undoubtedly is one of the best judges of boxing in New Zealand at the present time. There is a desire among certain local followers of boxing to see a professional contest decided in Dunedin, and it is suggested that the Otago Association should consider tho advisable ness of securing tho services of Hock Keys and J. Hcgarty, tho Now Zealand light-weight champion. My advice to tho association is not. to touch it with a pole, but to devote their funds towards improving amateur sport. A purse for Keys and any other light-weight would make a big hole in their funds, and they probably would not get value for the outlay such a contest would entail. There will be plenty of boxing here this year to satisfy even tho most fastidious without entering into professional bouts. A correspondent in the Auckland Herald, criticising the matching of Hock Keys with John Summers, declares it to bo a farce to match a man who is a boxer with a man who is a fighter, and suggests that it would have been bettor to have matched Hegarty and Summers, two good fighters. Tommy Burns has asked Mr W. F. Corbett, of the Sydney Sun. what aro the best forms that could be arranged for Arthur Pel key to vis : t Australia and meet any three white men in t.lm world. Through his defeat of Luther M'Carfhey. Pelkey is the white heavy-weight champion of tho world. Y A COIN ATION TR OUBLES. TIMARU, July 28. Tho competitors for tho boxing championships are arriving. Vaccination troubles w 1! ennso Payne (Auckland, bantam-weight) and Murphy (Wellington, welter-weight) to withdraw, and Cadman (Auckland, middleweight) may have to do ;o. Several others have rather bad arms. HAWKE S BAY TOURNEY. , HASTINGS, July 22. About 600 people were present at a tourney held by the Hawke’s Bay Boxing Association this evening. The principal event was a fifteen-round professional contest between Hock Keys (9.12) and W. Hannan for a purse of £IOO. After a splendid fight Keys won on points.
