Luke Wilson returned from Sydney this week, after spending a holiday there. lie will be riding at the Grand National meeting. . Mr S. Pitt, of Stratford, returned from Sydney this week, and brought the St. Ambrose gelding Waiotapu back with him. He contracted muscular rheumatism on the other side, and in consequence did not show any form. It is reported that A. Oliver is leaving Sydney next Saturday on the return trip. It is stated that ho is returning to ride Awahau in the Winter Cup. Ho rode the Mahaki gelding when he won at Bulls, Dannevirkc, and Wairarapa. Oliver rode the winner of the race three years in succession. The injury that Hoanga sustained on the morning of the races at Trcntham turned out more serious than was at first thought. It was found that tho fracture was done at some previous time. Tho gelding was destroyed last Sunday morning. He was one of the best short-distance steeplechasers in the dominion, and a very quick fencer. He won a double at Trcntham two years ago, and in the interval had scored at Caulfield and Ellerslio. Tho July Steeplechase on tho second day at Trcntham would have been a gift to him. The owner of the Native was lucky to moot such a poor field, and showed his good judgment by picking up a decent stake so easily. Followers of Native and Coronetted were going for a big win in doubles, and were unlucky to miss. The injuries that Colboggan sustained at tli*- start of the Parliamentary Handicap were thought to have ended his career. He certainly appeared to pull up on three logs, but be was able to go back to Hastings with the other members of 11. Hickey's team. The Lethe mare Gay Lawless was shipped to Sydney to-day. She is intended for hurdle racing. She started twice at Woodviilo in February, and ran third each day. Semaphore has been thrown out of training, and her box in J. Ayres’s stable has been filled by a half-sister to M< rrivonia, by Elevation. Mount Victoria, who has been spelling since the Nelson meeting, again joined C. Pritchard’s team this week. T. Pritchard, who has bad a lot of trouble with the leg he broke when riding Loolanter at Feilding 15 months ago, is now on tho road to recovery. He had a ride at T’rontham one morning this week. Ho would have liked to have ridden at tho Grand National, but his leg is not strong enough. A stable employee named Hector Campbell. connected with J. Ayres’s Trcntham stable, met with injuries on the first day of the "Wellington meeting which ended fatally yesterday. lie was leading Semaphore round the birdcage prior to the start of the Stewards’ Handicap, when she became suddenly startled, and knocked Campbell down and trampled on him. Ho was dazed, but walked away and rode work nextday. lie took bad later, and was removed to the hospital, where he died yesterday. His relatives reside in Oamaru, and were with the unfortunate lad when be died.
