LAWRENCE NOTES.

(From Ocr Ows Correspondent.) LAWRENCE. July 26. The mining claims in the district have having had a good run, the wet season having given an abundant water supply, ■whilst the heavy snow which has fallen on the higher country gives an assurance of its continuance until well on to the summer. Although there are no new developpents as regards mining to chronicle, it is rleasing to be able to report that all the flairas are getting satisfactory returns and jhat in some cases substantial dividends jire not infrequent. The acetylene gas installation, which embraces Ross place, Colonsay street, and the Town Hail, was completed by the contractors (Messrs Blackwood and Son) on Friday, and in the evening the new light was turned on by his Worship the Mavor in the presence fit" a good number of citizens. The initial trial proved satisfactory, and it is confidently expected that i’n a very short time there will be a demand for an extension of the mains k> other streets. The forthcoming Daffodil Day is beginning to excite some interest among horticultural enthusiasts, and the local Society has already got the preparation of

the programme in hand. The Reservoir Reserve, overlooking the town, has been greatly improved this year by the plantins out of an enormous quantity of native shrubs and the laying off of plots for daffodils, which have been planted out by our leading narcissi growers. 'The roads in all directions are in a very bad condition owing to the exceptionally wet season, but the condition of the -Main road to Roxburgh excites the most comment, the county engineer and the members of the County Council coming in for unmeasured condemnation for their alleged neglect of this highway. Motor traffic between Lawrence and Roxburgh is practically stopped, and will not likely be renewed till a considerable improvement in the road takes place.
