SOUTHLAND CHAMPION PLOUGHING MATCH.
The annual match of the Sfcuthland Champion Association was held last week on Mr J. B. Grant's farm at Branxholm. There was a large gathering of fanners and others from all the surrounding districts, and it was estimated that fully 1000 were present. There was a nice lot of horseflesh on the field, and Southland need not be ashamed of the splendid type of animal that is being bred for general farm purposes. X ever before lias a better lot of horses been seen ar a ploughing match in the history of Southland. Great credit is due to the various officials who carried out their respective duties expeditiously, and especially to the swretary (Mr John Gilkinson) and the treasurer (Mr Denmston Cuthbertson). The judges were: Ploughing— Messrs W. Clarke (Woodlands) and Walter P»lak : e (Branxholm), U. MT’arlane, Peter M'Dermid, and Malcolm Gray; specials - Messrs Duncan M'Callurn and James Drain, inn., jumping—Messrs J. Vielcery. Bruce Ireland, and W. 11. Ronald. The following are the results: — Class A (champion doub'e furrow).—A. Lindsay 1, D. Hardy 2. F. Lindsay 3; best break, best finish, and straightost, ploughing D. Hardy. Class B (double furrow, for ploughmen who have never gained a. first prize in a senior class). —A. Fraser 1. J. Hubber 2, J. Morton 3: best break and straightost nlouglrng. A Fraser; best finish, John Morton. Class C (single furrow). —G. Kidd 1, G. Grant 2; best break, best finish, and straightost ploughing, James Grant. C'hiss D (double-furrow plain ploughing).— J. Bennie 1. A. M'Dowel! 2. J. M. M Galium 3; best break and straightest ploughing, J. M‘Cal!um : best finish. A, M Dowc-11; champion lot on field. A. Lindsav. Jumping (hunters).—J. Swale’s Beaumont
