INSPECTION OF MACHINERY.

Tlie report o! the Inspection of Machinery Department to Parliament to-day states that the practice now adopted of submitting plane of machinery and boilers before erecting has done much to secure uniformity throughout the dominion. During the year 7011 boilers had been inspected. The fees received amounted to £7969. The defects discovered totalled 1259, of which 33 were very dangerous. New boilers to the number of 587 had been registered during the year, their horse-power being 6649. Auckland easily headed the list- for the installation of new boilers, her contribution to the total of 6549 horse-power being 2291 J. Auckland South was next with 855. and Taranaki third with 712. Wellington and Wellington North combined totalled 618 ; Canterbury and Canterbury South, 400; and Otago, 241 borec-powcr. No boiler explosion occurred in the dominion during the year, and the department was proud of this record. There ha-d boon a. number of accidents with other machinery, notably with lifts. An important branch of work was the survey of steamers. Altogether 734 surveys were made, and the fees received amounted to £3BOB. The total revenue of the department was £14,082 and the expenditure £15.545 18s Bd.
