MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS

DUNEDIN CITY. There were on the roll the names of 26,031 persons who were entitled to vote, the numbers in the different wards being as under Central 4144, Leith 8236, NorthEast Valley 2950, Caversham 7513, Ro&lyn 3188. At the elections in 1911 there were 19,015 names on the roll, but since then Roslyn has become a part of Greater Dunedin. Last week in the mayoral contest 13,734 persons exercised their privilege, or 53 per cent. In 1911 the number of voters was 12,051. or 63 per cent. April 30. For tho mayoralty Councillor E. R. Parker defeated the sitting Mayor (Mr J. J. Corry) by 837 votes to 791. GORE. April 30. For the Borough Council only three of the old councilors were returned, though some of the otheis had previous municipal oxnoricnce. Mr Duncan M'Farlane defeated Mr Andrew Bain by 77 votes for the mayoralty. The council election resulted in the return of 11 members of the citizens’ ticket and one Lalxuir candidate, who was a mem ber of the last council. Cr Ashworth headed the poll. NASEBY, April 30. Owing to tho retirement of Mr William Beath there was no mayoral election to-day, Mr John Francis being returned unopposed. BALCLUTMA, May 1. The following councillors wore elected : Messrs J. Uanskin. I) Ritchie, D. T. Fleming J. Clark. J. Sheddan, Jno. Begg, J. Wilkins, E. J. Bovd, and C. E. Naish. Messrs Ritchie, Begg. Fleming, and Bovd are new men in the council, although the latter two are ex-Mayors of the borough. The rejected cand'dates were Messrs G. W. Wood, Geo. Smith (retiring councillors), and Alex. Stevenson. MIT,TON, May 1. The polling at the municipal elections on Wednesday was fairly heavy, despite the

inclement weather. Ten candidates were nominated for the nine vacancies, and Cr T. G. Henderson (sitting councillor) was defeated by two votes although an official recount, yet to be made, might alter the result. The voting was as follows : —Messrs M. H. Hitchon 343. Alan Garland 37, Richard Lewis Francis 25. Though considerable interest was taken, in the poll the voting was light owing to the inclement weather. Messrs Parker, Klimeck, and Garland are new members.
