DUNEDIN HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.

The annual meeting- of the Dunedin Horticultural Society was held on the 14th, a large number of members attending. Mr J. Rennie (the president) occupied the chair.

The annual report read as follows: " Owing to the exceptional climatic conditions the affaire of the society have during the past year been carried on with difficulty as far as the shows were concerned. The summer show, after postponement, was abandoned, but as a compensation a very successful* show was held in the end of January. The autumn show, after postponement, was abandoned altogether, interference with the schedule has taken place only under most undue circumstances, and only after the fullest consideration, involving extra meetings. The financial position is sound, and has been strengthened so much during the year that any development of the work of the society may be undertaken with confidence. The financial position might easily be better, for many members have not paid up their subscriptions. The amount received for members' tickets is £SO less than that of last year. The attendance at shows has been very good, and despite the loss of receipts from one show th© money reeo'ved for admission is only £2 less than that received during the previous year. Roses _ and sweet peas at tiieir best were practically ruled out by weather conditions; but excellent sweet peas were shown in the January show, and the chrysanthemum show was as good as ever. As an advance in _ the number of trophies for competition was made during the year, two cups being added (one from Skene and Fleming and one from Robt. Sydenham, Limited, Birmingham), it was hoped_ that additional interest would bo aroused in the sections they were attached to —vegetables and sweet peas; but here again the weather ruled otherwise. It is to be hoped that a cup for roses may be added this year. Mr Neil Gordon, of Sawyers Bay, is the holder of the Sydenham Daffodil Cup for this year." The balance sheet showed that the income for the vea.r was £399 3s sd, and the expenditure £3Ol 5s 9d, leaving a net profit of £96 17s 3d. The assets were stated at £264 6s Bd, and the liabilities nil. The report was adopted.
