Black Northern will be the sole representative of Auckland at the Hawke's Bay meeting this week. In the principal hurdle race the son of Salvadan has been given an imi>oßt of 12.5, conceding 91b to Paisano next on the list. The Auckland Racing Club will be represented at the Racing Conference next month by Messrs H. T. Gorrie and E. A. Prince. The northern club is evidently satisfied with the Rules of Racing, as they have decided to submit no remits or proposed amendments at fche forthcoming conference. . .

F. Howard, who received serious injuries as a result of his fall from Pleiades {which broke a leg and was destroyed) in the Wanganui Steeplechase, is still confined to hospital, a-nd although now reported to be making fair progress towaids recovery, is not yet out of danger. The Minister of Internal Affairs (Mr G. W. Russell) informed Mr G. V. Pearco, M.P., last week that he would be agreeable to increase the number of totalisator permits for next season by 20, but the Minister pointed out that he could not do this on his own responsibility. The whole question of totalisator nermits would have to be considered by Cabinet, and later by Parliament before any additional permits could be granted.

J. M. OamCron has had a run of bad luck with his jumpers this season, and consequently the Hawke's Bay trainer Tins decided to abandon his nrojected visit to Australia with a string of jumpers. There still appears to be some doubt whether' Corazon will be fit to compete at the Hawke's Bav meeting, as he still appears to be troubled with one of his forelegs. It is now possible that the son of Ooeur de Lion will not be seen carrying silk before the Wellington meeting. The Tarannki Jockey Club is determined to make a strenuous effort at the forthcoming Racing Conference to carry a resolution affirming the desirability of appointing stipendiarv stewards. After the genera? outcry of the sporting press_ of the Dominion in reference to unsatisfactory running at. numerous meetings this season, it is to be earnestly hoped the southern delegates who have previouslv blocked the reform will be outvoted next rnVmtb. Ben Deeley. who has already 84 wins to his credit this season. stilt reanires five more in order to eclipse C Jenkins's record of 88. Deeley is most keen on rstablishinc & Tt A w record, and consequently he has decided to visit DVivhc's Bay. Napier Park. Oisborne. and Wellincrton mectino-s before leaving for Australia to ride for R. J Mason. Ginsv B"11e. winner of the A.B.C. Pailway Handicap and W.P.C. Handicnr). ha« alwavs h"en looked upon a« a sprinter, but evidently her owner consider.s

the mare can stay, as she figures i«c the Zealand Cup nominations. The Auckland Racing ulub had to pay in taxation to the Government on this season's operations £9502 Os 2d. Tlie Wanganui Jockey Club has recognised the services of their handicapper (Mr G. Morse) by granting him a substantial bonus and recommending an increase in salary next season. The Ellerslie trainer, T. A. Williams, left for Sydney last week, and took wijh him the horses Sir Artegal, Blue Mountain, Butter, Monoplane, Don Quex, Manuwera, Gaby, and a Soult—Lady Kegel filly. I* is VV llhams's intention to settle in Australia. Northern owners are apparently finding that the curtailment of racing days makes it necessary for them to send their horses further afield than formerly, or else throw them out of training for some months. Evidence of this is the number of Auok-land-owned horses nominated for the Gisborne meeting, which numbers 19.
