SHEEP DOG NOTES.

"William Lumsden, of Palmerston South, has, I hear, two Border collie dogs in quarantine at present—Border Tweed, black, .white, and tan, two years old: Cheviot Tip, black and white, two and a.-half years old.. Tweed is- sired by the dog that won the trial at the Royal Agricultural Show, when held at Newcastle-on-Tyne in 1909, and many other trials. He was successful a.t, Cheviot. Tip is sired by a son of the famous Old Hemp. Neither of these dogs have ever run at a trial. Tweed is a remarkable, steady dog. very fast, good age, easy to command, and has perfect comond over his sheep. Tip is very fast and stylish. He is thought by some to bo the better dog of -the two. Mr Lumsden is the owner of Cheviot Jed (imported). She is a three-year-old, a nice black and white, very fast, good eye', steady, and extra good with a single sheep. He has a young dog of Cheviot Jed by Hemp 11, now owned bv Messrs King and M'Leod, New South Wales. His eye and stylo would be hard to beat a.t the present time. All those dog= are decended -from Old Hemp. Cheviot Jed was bred and trained by Mr Lumsden. She had a full brother when seven and a-half months old that wan second in a trial. He was a very successful dog at trials. Jed will bo mated with Tweed' after he leaves quarantine. These two dogs in .quarantine are bought through no person's recommendation, as it is only 12 months since Mr Lumsden left the Borders, and he knew both dogs, and chose, them for their high quality of work as well as their good breeding, which is second to none. BRUCE DOG TRIALS. The annual sheep dog trial© of the Bruce Dog Tria's' Club, were held at Messrs Sinclair Bros, property, " One Tree Point," near Milton, on Wedneslay and Thursday, when the entries in each of the four events were stronger numerically than on previous occasions, and some good work wa s witnessed. The climatic conditions on Wednesday were most execrable, heavy rain falling throughout the day, whilst the paddock wae thoroughly soaked with the rains of the past few weeks. The Maiden (20 entries), and Farmers' Local Event (13 entries) were completed on Wednsday, and the All-comers' (21 entries), and Farmers' Open Event (12 entries) during Thursday. The judging was undertaken by Mr D. Mander (Waiwera South) and Mr M. Fahey (Evans Flat), and their decisions appeared to meet with {/he general approval of the competitors. The sheep used were threequarterbreds, and were generously lent for the occasion by Mr Thos. M'Donald, Glenkelrie Farm. The chief event—the Allcomers' — won by y B» Houliston's (Kakapuaka) Rock, with Mr R. Pollock's (Gore) Sharp ,second. The officials worked hard to insure the eucessof the gathering, and Meesr s P. Boyd (president), and A. Buchanan were most energetic, the latter again proving himself an obliging and efficient secretary.
