CHINESE GAMBLING.
THIRTY-EIGHT BEFORE THE COURT.
AUCKLAND, May 20.
As a sequel to the raid by the police on the night of April 12 on the Chinese premises at Wakefield street 38 Chinese made their appearance before Mr Cutten, S.M., at the Police Court to-day. Ting Hing was charged with being the occupier of premises used as a common gaming house and Jim Wong and Ah Lee were also adjudged principals inasmuch as they assisted in the managing of the premises. The remaining 35 were charged with being found in a common gaming house. The three principals, who were defended by Mr A. E. fokelton, entered a plea of "Not guilty." At the conclusion of the evidence against the accused, Mr Skelton, who appeared for the principals, said he' had no alternative but to substitute " Guilty " for his previous plea of " Not guilty. ' His Worship then proceeded to deal with the remaining 35, intimating that he would impose a sentence upon the three principals at the conclusion of the hearing of the charge against the others. Twenty of these pleaded " Not guilty," out eventually the whole 35 pleaded "Guilty," each being convicted and fined £l. Ah Lee, one of the principals, who was only a new arrival in Auckland, was fined £2, whilst the charge, against Jim Wong was reduced to one of being found in a common gaming house. He was fined £l. Ting Hing was remanded till Wednesday, bail being allowed in one surety of £SO.
