RAND WINTER SHOW AND EXHIBITION. Of FARM EXHIBITS, DAIRY PRODUCE, HOME INDUSTRIES, NEW ZEALAND MANUFACTURES,, FAT STOCK EXHIBITION, MACHINERY, IMPLEMENTS, SCHOOL COMPETITIONS, oIDE SHOWS. Etc., In the Society's BRYDOXE HALL, ANNEXES, and - Messrs Fuller and Sons' NEW HALL, On Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, 4th, sth, 6th, and 7th June, 1912. ALL ENTRIES CLOSE WEDNESDAY, 15th MAY, 1912. One of the attractions arranged for the Infantile Visitors is Professor Godfrey's Performing Birds, Trained Siberian Terriers, Performing Parrots, and Crested Penguins. Early application for Floor Space- necessary. Schedules of Show and full particulars fro pi H. V. FULTON, Secretary. P.O. Box 84. Telephone 1031. The Entries for the above Show, which close this day, have been coming in in a steady stream? and indications already point to a very fine display of the best products of the country. The Show will be opened in His Majesty's Theatre on Tuesday afternoon, the'4th June, by the Prime Minister, the Hon. Thos. Mackenzie. A pleasing feature of the Entry is the largo increase in Factory Cheese and Factory Butter, especially from tho factories of the North Island, which now fully realise the value of Olago's Metropolitan Show as an advertising • medium. The Grading Competitions for Factory Cheese will show that Otago still maintains its position for quality. Quite a number of novelties will be provided this year, and tho _ Side Shows allotted space will be educative and move than usually interesting. The huge. Cheese, which has a specially attractive interest to visitors, will be- dealt with daily, so that everyone may have the chance of securing a piece of it. The display by the Agricultural Department promises to be more than usually attractive, and the products from the various Experimental Farms are certain to be carefully examined by farmers and others in search of disease-resisting seeds and plants. Seating accommodation has engaged the attention of a sub-committee, and_ Musical Items will be provided at intervals. Farmers from other parts of New Zealand want to learn why the Dunedin Winter Show has been such an undoubted success, financially and otherwise, ever since its inception. They will learn what a good secretary and a live committee can do. Familiar names cron up year after year, in the Root Competitions. Docs this not strike other farmers as being somewhat peculiar? Do these men set aside cabbage patches which they use regularly? or how do thev treat their ground? A very valuable object-lesson would < be conveyed by tho association if the winners stated the preparation which their ground had received, the description and quantity of tho manure used, the date they sewed the seed, and the va.riety grown. One thing would certainly be ascertained, and that would be that they did not stint the manure, and that their mother! proved payable, and manifested itself throughout the rotation. If there was an open class for all New Zea.land, nnd another for roots grown south of Dunedin. and a third section for roots grown north of Dunedin, such an arrangement would induce large additional entries and cause emulation in a more general way. Farmers go on growing turnip crops vear after year which might be very much improved upon; and the same remark applies to the grain crons which follow, them. If the lessons of the Winter Show were exhausted cverv year, such ft difference would be made on the farming of this Dominion as has never been effected hitherto. Thero is one aspect of the Winter Show which does not strike the agricultural mind very fronnentlv. and that is, how much the Society and tho farmer are indebted to the manufacturer for contributing his share of making the Show attractive and, generally, a success; and how liberally he advertised his wares and makes up the stalls which delight the hearts of visitors to tho Show. Industrial Exhibitions like the Winter Show would not be complete without, them, and from these exhibits wo learn much oa to th* desirable class of stock to produce. No one will them tfeo turnover thev get at the Show. Thev richly deserve all thev g c fc at the hands of country resident*. Thev ore men whose intelligent foresight and l.usincES capacity contribute in no small tdetrree to the!"- own advancement and to the success of the Show.
