B B. Couston wrote in reference to the bridge at Evansdale.—The letter was received, consideration being held over till next meeting, pending the receipt of plans and further information. T. J. Harrison wrote asking that tho road leading from Fitzgerald's to Murdering Beach bo improved. —Inspector to report at next meeting. F. Hilgendorf wrote on behalf of the Waitati Methodist Church Trustees asking permission to extend the culvert in front of the church property. —The permission requested was granted. P. A. N. Wilson wrote asking that tho council take- steps to stop the nuisance caused by cattle wandering about the streets. —It was resolved that the letter be received, and cattle-owners notified. A largo number of ratepayers and residents of Purakanui township forwarded a petition requesting the formation of a passable track to the township.—lt was resolved that the inspector repair the present route around Baird's boundary and report on the probable cost of the proposed track round the point. Cowan wrote in reference to the bad state of tho Waitati-Wakari road.—Road to be attended to and overhanging scrub to be cut The Secretary of the Otago Motor Association wrote in reference to the conference held between the local bodies, the Otago Motor Association, and tho Otago Motor Cycle Club, and enclosing a number of recommendations agreed upon.—lt was resolved that the report from Crs Orboll and Kilpatrick bo received, and that they be considered satisfactory, the letters and recommendations in connection therewith to be brought under the notice of the delegates at the forthcoming conference of local

The Inspector reported with respect to Hawksbury Riding that in reference to the application of ratepayers in Nenthorn Valley in ro the Nenthorn road and the Zig-zag that 120 chains needed ploughing at the sides and rounding up, at an estimated cost of £24, and 115 chains required surfacing and several culverts cleaning, at a-n estimated cost of £l3. Ten chains of light siding on Sandy track required forming, and about a day's ploughing and scooping -was required near the blue cutting, while the water tables on the Stenhouso road needed cleaning. On the hill at the sanatorium there were required some 25 yards of maintenance gravel. The gravel contract on Thornburn s road was unfinished owing to the shortage of trucks, 13 still being needed to complete the job. All the stone in the gravel had been broken and the road generally surfaced. The contracts in Merton riding had made slow progress owing to harvesting and threshing operations. The water tables on Porteous road had been cleaned out and portions of Evans-dale road repaired. He had been unable to get metal for the War-rington-tc-Seaciiff road, but expected to get it during this month, when trucks would be available. The footpaths at SeacfifT would be attended to as soon as screenings could be got, and the formation contract on the native reserve would bo completed during the present week. Ho recommended the placing of pipes at the culvert near the top of Kilmog Hill, and a pipe culvert wa« also required on the Warrington-to-Seacliff road, opposite Mrs Crawford's. In the Blueskin riding the formation and gravel contract or. Biand'6 road had been completed. Tho water tables on the Wai-tati-to-Wakari road had been cleaned out, and the slips removed. The water tables ->n the Main road from tho school to Pullar's had also been cleaned out. The metal contract on M'lntosh's road was making fair progress, and the slips on tho road through Purakanui township had been removed, and tho water table 3 cleaned out. The metal on Longbeach road had been raked in and blinded, the road leading to Cockrane's repaired, and theV.ater tables at the top end of the Cedav Creek road cleaned out. and ihe road generally repaired. In the North-East Valley riding tho metal contract on the Waitati-Wakar© road had been completed, and also the ono on Warren's road. An extra 20yds of maintenance gravel was required at the top emd of the YVaitati-Wakari road, as it was badly rutted. Tho footpaths at Sawyers' Bay had betn repaired and the ditches at the sides of the main road had been cleaned out and tho ford repaired with metal, which would be blinded with rotten rook. Tho roads in M'Dermid township had been oomipleted with 'the exception of tho portion from the bridge to tho Town Hall, which was still included in a vegetable garden. The gronting of the wing walls was not finished when he visited the bridge, but Mr M'Dermid had agreed to have it done, and this would make everything satisfactory. , . ~, Tho reports for the various ridings were received and appoved. It was resolved that the inspector procure tho necessary metal for tho Waitati-Wakari road, and that Mr M'Dermid's loads be taken over when he had done the grouting to the walls of the bridgo and given a sufficient guarantee to form tho unformed parts of ">© r to the satisfaction of the inspector within 14 months. The inspector was instructed to do what work ho considered necessary to Mr M'lntosh's road, and also to report to the council at the next meeting as to tho best means to ease the pinch on Holmsbujh road, and the estimated cost of the same. It was resolved to do the necessary work on tho Kilmog hill, and also to put in the culvert on tho Wayrrmgton-Seacliff road. Tho inspector was instructed bo get the necessary work done on the Nenthorn and Zig-zag roads either by day work or by tender as ho should think best, tho same to apply to Sandy track and Stenhouso road. It was resolved that in regard to the gravol required on tho Main road the matter bo held over till next meeting. Tho Ranger reported having impounded 65 head of cattle during tho month.—Re- i ceived and approved. TENDERS Tho tender of L. M'Lachlan (5s lid per vard) for the supply of 50yds of metal, Port Chalmers-Blueskin road, was accopted. GENERAL. The clerk wa? instructed to procure the necessary poison for the purpose of preparing grain for bird-poisoning. It was resolved that applications be called for a permanent man with a team of two horses and plant to do the necessary work required ir: Morton and Ha-wkesbury ridings. Ir, was resolved to notify Messrs A. and T Burt that the council would hold them responsible for any damage dono to the county roads as the result of tho cartage of tho roaterial for tho water supply to tho Seacliff Mental Hospital. ACCOUNTS Accounts to the amount of £289 10s 3d were passed for payment.
