The result of the mayoral election today was anticipated by many so far as Mr Holland's victory was concerned, but there is great surprise that Mr Dougall, the present Mayor, should be last on the list. Mr Dougall was elected Mayor by the council when Mr T. E. Taylor died, and has filled the office well; but he is extremely outspoken, and he has been strongly opposed bv the Labour members of the council To that fact, to the vote-splitting caused by Dr Thacker's candidature and to tho prohibitionists' support received by Mr Holland, Mr Dougall owe 3 his dsfeat. Tho city loses the services of a useful man. Mr Holland, in his first speech of campaign, announced that Mr T. E. iajJor had once told him that he (Mr i&ylor) would like him to follow him as Mayor, end this announcement had its oesired effect. It incidentally brought upon Mr Holland a mild rebuke from tho rimes, which remarked that: "It was perhaps only natural in tho circumstances that he should have mentioned his intimate relations with the late Mayor, but Mr Taylor s memory, dear as it will always remain to the people of Christchurch, should not te evoked for the purpose of influencing the party politics of the city." Mr Holland' is manager of an iron foundry company, and has only been a member of the City Council for a year. ELECTIONS ELSEWHERE. NEW PLYMOUTH, April £4.
