GAMESP. S. Leonha-rdt (White) succumbs to Carl' SobJecter (Black) in the following- garno fought between the two in the first round of the masters' tournament at San Sebastian. It is an interesting and instructive game, despite the early exchange of queens, Schlcchter forcing the win on the minimum of material advantage by accurate end-game

(Notes from Yorkshire Post.)

(a) The early exchange of queens gives away the advantage of first move. i (b) This appears dangerous in view of the open file. . (c) If B x Kt. 19 B-R 4. i (d) More prudent would have been P-Q R 3 or Q Kt 3. I (e) Theoretically, the ending appears to be drawn, the bishops being of opposite colours. (f) Excellent play, restricting the movements of the White K and the two queen's side pawns. j (g) This manceuvre is a typical example of the modern school of chess. It is very probable that the pawns could have been pushed forward as the position stands, but the bishop is more effectively posted on the king's side. i WELLINGTON CHESS CLCF. ANNUAL MEETING. !
