RACING IN NEW ZEALAND.

FOR BURY PARK TROTTING CLUB. WINTER MEETING. Fikst Day—Friday, May 3. Tho Forbury Park Trotting Club opened its winter meeting on Friday in fine weather, and there wae a large attendance of the public. Owing to the strong wind which h.id prevailed since Wednesday, the track was in very fair order, although it appeared a trifle dead. The meeting was opened with the First Amateur Handicap, and in this event Highball had nothing to menace his chances seriously, and he woo comfortably from tihe favourite, Bell B. Jessie Hamlin, a two-year-old, set a hot pace in the Pacifio Handicap, and just tired in the last bit after loading all the way. Franzalena got up and beat her by over a length. Ardoairn, who was favourite, held a good position to within three furlongs from home, when he skipped, a-nd this spoiled his chances. Lady Baron won the Beach Handicap all the way. She tired towards the finish, and just had enough left in reserve to stall off a. challenge by Bermaline. S. M. was sent out favourite, but he began badJy, and d'id not go kindly during the race. All those who coloured for the President's Handicap went on to the track, and in a close betting race Princess Louise was elected favourite, while School Girl, Emmeline, and Maelstrom were backed in that order, there being very little between the figures on the machine on each horse. Emmeline came up too soon at the start, and was called off, and Medallion wrecked his chance by beginning unkindly. School Girl set out to make the pace after the first quarter, but Princess Louise was always fairly handy, and with a lap to go the favourite went' up to School Girl and had her beaten three furlongs from home. Franzic ran well, and finished third, and Maelstrom was a good fourth. Louis Dillon was a very hoi, favourite for tho Trial Handicod. and although Robert R. had a good lead at one stage, the favourite was able to win comfortably at tho finish. Emmeline was Bent against the track record, and she.had the assistance of a pacemaker, which was ridden by Mr Allan. Beginning Well, the mare passed the first fin-long in 15 -1-ssec, the second in 31 2-S&CC, and three furlongs in 46 2-sseo, a,nd completed the first half-mile in lmin 2sec dead The seven furlongs were covered in lmin 52sec, and the full distance, the last furlong of which she covered comfortably, was traversed in 2min 8 3-ssee, equalling the record established by King Cole at Christchurch last year. The previous track record was held by the trotter Revenue, his time being 3 l-ssec slower than that registered by Emmeline. The owner (Mr M'Donald) and the mare were cheered, and the president of the club (Mr Gore publicly congratulated Mr M'Dona.id on havin'o, such a splendid animal. He also announced that by her performance Emmeline had secured for her owner a cheque for £IOO from the trotting club. It was a hitrhlj creditable performance, and speaks well for the - stallion Rothschild who sired both Revenue and Emmeline. Emmeline did not carry weights or boots. The sectional times are unofficial. Royal Rothschild looked all over a winner in the St. Clair. but at the finish Lorrio Queen beat hirn. after the favourite had broken at the home turn. John M. won the Regent Handicap from end to on d Ravenschild, who was third, appeared to lose a couple of lengths in getting off tho mark. Bequest began well in the Flying Handicap, and when Radiant

Morn broke in the last half-mile she was left out in front of the others and won easily. Since the last meeting, the club has erected three look-out stands on the track, and from these coigns of vantage it is much easier to see the line of running as the horses race up the stretches and round the turns. The sum of £10,178 was put through the machine, as against £8477 on the corresponding day last year. The Forbury Park Trotting Club concluded its meeting in somewhat cold and wintry weather, but, beyond a mild shower the threatening rain held off until the last race There was a very large attendance, and the card for the day provided some very interesting sport. The track was again in good order, and quite as fast as on the previous afternoon. Burly Bob commenced by winning the Second Amateur Handicap from Mandor. Highball put in a couple of breaks when appearing to hold a fair chance of getting up to those in front. Frances supplanted Wild Lou in tho lead after a mile in the Progressive Handicap, and won from Diving Bell at the finish. After the race tho driver of the winner was reprimanded for taking up Wild Lou s running before obtaining tho regulation two lead. Bermaline was patiently handled in the Otago Handicap, and won after a. good race fron Sweet Child, who had carried on the running for the bulk of the journey. P. C. Redwood and Violet M. were close up at the finish. Gianella was the only withdrawal from the Winter Oats Handicap, which proved one of the most interesting races ever seen on the Forbury Park tiack. Ravenschild set out to make the pace, but after going a mile Emmeline had grodmallv closed on the leaders, the order being Ravenschild. Dr Chutney, Glendalough, and Emmeline. Going down the back, three furlongs from home, Dr Chutney supplanted Ravenschild in the lewd, but before reaching the home turn Glendalough and Emmeline both went past. Once in a line for home the last-mentioned took charge, and, in a good finish with Dr Chutney, who again put in a claim, beat him by a short neck. Glendalough was a good three lengths away, and then came Ravenschild and Adonis together. Emmeline put up a brilliant performance, and. running through the field, established an Australasian record for two miles. She was well handled by M'Donnell, who made up the start he had to concede without getting very far from the rails. On returning to the enclosure both horse and owner were accorded an enthusiastic reception from the spectators. Riverina had a comfortable win in the Domain Handicap, and the Peninsula Handicap was practically fought out between Happy Lad and Combine. The Park Handicap was unfortunately deprived of a good deal of interest through Princess Louise and Gianella being over the mark before their bells sounded. _ Dr Chutney got well away, and in the Final Handicap got well away, and in the final lap Glendalough in behind him. Once in the straight Gendalough drew out. and beat Dr Chutney by a length. Pinewood and Bequest got out in the early part of the

Farewell Handicap, and were joined by Franzaleno entering the home stretch. Once in a line for home Sfchool Girl came with a brilliant run, and, cutting down the leaders, won by three lengths.
