SHIPWRECK RELIEF SOCIETY.

A meeting of the committee of the Shipwreck Relliet Society of New Zealand was held on the 23rd inst., and was attended! by Messrs C. W. Chamberlain, G. B. Bullock, F. O. Bridgman, G. Fenwick, W. A. Moore, and Captain Strang. Apolog.es were received for the absence of Messrs W. Belcher, T. W. Whit Son, and Captain Beaumont. Mr Chamberlain was elected chairman, Mr Moore treasurer, it being mentioned that the society was much indebted to that gentleman for the work he had done and the way he had managed the finances, and Mr E. S. Wilson secretary, at the same salary as formerly. The Royal Shipwreck Relief Society, New South Wales, wrote enclosing a letter received from Mrs M. Patterson, Auckland, relative to the loss of her son, and! pointed out that as Mrs Patterson resided in New Zealand her ease did not oomo within the scope of the society It, therefore, referred the matter to the New Zealand Society.— It was mentioned that £lO had been forwarded Mrs Patterson, and this action was approved. The Auckland Harbour Board wrote that on the occasion of the visit of the American fleet to Auckland one of the seamen (Mr M. Weber) on the Glacier had 1 made some purchases in town, and had received eight dollars excess change. I.ater, Mr Weber had written to the board forwarding the eight dollars, and had asked that the rightful ownci might be traced, or, failing that, the money be donated to a charitable institution. The board had endeavoured 1 to locate the shop where the purchases had been made, but had failed 1 to find the owner. The board therefore forwarded thq eightdollar bill to be donated to the funds of the society.—Received. A statement of receipts and expenditure from January 1 bo April 23 showed that the former, Jess £62 Is 6d balance in the bank, amounted to £IBB 16s lid, and the latter to £27 17s Pd. The donations were: Thames Harbour Board, £2 2s; Westport Coal Company, £5 Ss; Otago Harbour Board, £lO ICs; Gisborne Harbour Board, £10; Timaru Harbour Board, £3 ss; Auck land Harbour Board, £1 12s; per Huddart Parker Co., £lO 12s 4d; and 1 per Onion Steam Ship Co., £35 12s Sd. It was resolved to place an additional £2OO on deposit with the Dunedin City Corpoiation when tho amount was available. The bank balance, it was mentioned, was £156 8s 3d, and there was £4- 10s 6d cash in hand Sundry accounts were passed for payment. Tho chairman, treasurer, Messrs J. A. Park and G. Fenwick were elected a committee for the ensuing year. The Chairman mentioned that the society did not apnear to have any particular legal standing, and ho thought it should bo registered under unclassified societies. —The matter was left in Mr Chamberlain’s hands to report to next meeting.
