LOCAL GOVERNMENT BILL.
STATEMENT BY THE MINISTER. AUCKLAND, April 24. Referring to the Local Government Bill to a reporter to-day the Hon. G. W. Russell (Minister in charge of the measure) mentioned the conference to be held in Wellington at the end of May. Mr Ruesell said :—“ Some amendments may be made in the bill, but it is the intention of the Government to push it through if possible, as it recognises tlxat the overloading of local bodies which now exists is a matter that should be remedied at as early a date as possible. We liave been approached with a view to having every local body in the Dominion represented at the conference, but that would be iimpossible. Anything embracing more than 60 or 70 delegates would be unworkable. It is the intention to first hold dis-
trict conferences to select delegates to represent them at the Wellington conference. The number of delegates has been fixed on a population basis, and if my serves me right Auckland City and district will have seven delegates on the conference.Mr Russell said he hoped the bill would be considered entirely apart from all party feeling.
