BOXING.

HAGERTY v. ELLIS. TIMARU, April 24. At the Timaru Boxing Association’s meeting to-night Hagerty (Timaru) beat Ellis (Wellington) in a 15-round contest for the professional feather weight championship of Now Zealand.

OTAGO ASSOCIATION'S TOURNAMENT.

Tile Otago Boxing Association concluded its tournament on the 23rd inst. at His Majesty’s Theatre, when there was another large attendance. Mr S. S. Myers occupied tho chair, Mr F. Shaw was referee, and Messrs T. Gil lies and J. Kilmartin judges. In a few preliminary remarks the Chairman referred to the fair and manly way in which the contests had been carried out on the previous evening. He said that Mr Shaw (the referee) had informed him that he had never before officiated at a‘tournament where the whole of tho competitions had been carried out in such an excellent spirit. The contests were of three rounds, each of three minutes. The following are the results: MIDDLE WEIGHTS (11.4). FINAL. D. Boreham (10.13) beat W. Styles (10.9). In the first round both men gave a nice exhibition of boxing, Styles showing some good footwork. The second meeting saw Boreham forcing matters, his opponent just missing a dangerous right upper cut. In the third round some vigorous boxing took place. Both men kept up the pace till just on the gong, when Styles had palpably had enough, Boreham proving a bit too strong for his game and clever opponent. Both men received loud applause at the conclusion of the contest. LIGHT WEIGHTS (10.0). SEMI-FINAL. E. Stewart (Wellington) beat J. H. Finnerty (9.11). W. F. North (9.13) beat T. Thompson (9.0). FINAL. North boat Stewart. The Wellington man proved himself a very nippy fighter, and a right swing to the jaw put his opponent out early in the first round. In the other meeting the first two rounds saw Thompson, despite the disparity in tho weights, forcing matters, North, who had the advantage of height and length, chiefly contenting himself with stalling off the attacks. In the third round the Invercargill boxer kept coming in, but could not quite reach his bigger opponent, who began to liven up and scored repeatedly with a straight right. Thompson, however, saved a lot of punishment by an effective smother. A deciding round of two minutes wag ordered, the fight going to North, ’the decision being received with cheers and groans. There was certainly very little to choose between the two men. Thompson had put up a very strenuous contest with Goodman the previous evening. In the final some spirited boxing was witnessed. North improved on his previous showing, holding his own in the rallies, while his defence was better than that of Stewart. Stewart, however, had tho better footwork, and in he infighting lost nothing by comparison with his opponent. FEATHER WEIGHTS (9.0). SEMI-FINAL P. Torrie (8.13) beat W. Parker (8.13). FINAL. Goodman (8.12) beat Torrie. Torrie put up a very good contest against his more-experienced opponent in the final, and in some of the rallies fully held his own. There was no doubt, however, as to who was the better all-round boxer. BANTAMS (8.4). SEMI-FINAL. J. H. Marks (7.11) beat C. Perry (8.4). FINAL. O. Farrell (8.4) beat Marks. Both youths gave a good exhibition of boxing in tho semi-final, Marks being especially clever, showing himself a twohand fighter, with excellent footwork and the ability to dodge the other boxer’s blows. The final did not go far, Marks succumbing to a right swing early in tho first round NOVICE (9.7). FINAL. W. Boreham (9.2) beat L. Twist 9(.0). Boreham had no difficulty in winning the contest, in which neither man showed any great science. NOVICE (10.9). SEMI-FINAL. J M’Pheo (10.3) beat J. Potter (9.12). FINAL. M‘Phec beat J. Pearson (10.9). HEAVY WEIGHTS. FINAL. P. Ruston (11.13) beat D. Boreham (10.13). Though it was Boroham’s second fight during the evening and he was giving away a lot of weight, ho stood up well to Ruaton for the throe rounds. Notwithstanding that the latter was palpably out of form he had too much ring craft for hio opponent; he also scored time and again with a straight left to the faoo.

WELTER (10.9). FINAL. E. Stewart (9.13) beat W. Styles (10.9). In the final round Styles made use ot good right and left swings, and appeared to have the advantage Early the second round he received a right hook to the jaw, and failed— evidently through a misapprehension —to get up before the full count.
