GOLF.
NOTES BI BULGER. The first round of the Otago Club’s championship (match play) was played on Saturday afternoon, when some very interesting games eventuated. Stronach and Fotheringhanl had a ding-dong battle, which was only decided on the eighteenth green. Young Glendining, contrary to expectations, put up a good fight against Park, and was 1 up at the turn. The match R. J. Smith v. B. J. Smith was also exciting. 11. J. was 1 up and 2 to play on. his redoubtable opponent, who, however, won the seventeenth and holed a two at the last green, thus winning by 1 up. The other matches wore won fairly easily. Following are the results : —Soolon beat , MacGregor 3 and 2, Park beat Glendining 4 and 2, Dr Ross beat Wales 4 and 3, B. J. Smith beat R. J. Smith 1 up, Stronach beat Fotheringham 1 up, H. G. Smith, beat Gale 7 and 6 (in this game Smith showed a glimpse of his old form, doing the course in 79, or 3 under bogey). _ Errol ■Smith beat A. Todd 5 and 4, and Brasch beat Leitoh 3 and 1. Next Saturday being monthly medal day at Balm ace wen, the championship matches will be continued' the following week, the draw being; Scolon v. Stronach, Park v. Dr Rose, B. J. Smith v. Errol Smith, and Brasch v. H. C. Smith. On Thursday next a Christchurch team will try conclusions with the Otago men for the much-coveted and 1 time-honoured Ha rimer and Gampbell-liosking Shields. Otago being the holders the matches will bo played at Balmaocwen. On the following day (Friday) Christchurch will attempt to wrest th© handsome Orbell Cup from Otago, which club has successfully resisted all onslaughts since winning from Timam three yours ago. In this competition eight ladies and a similar number of men oornjxxso a loam, and the result is decided 1 by single and mixed foursomes. Christchurch will be represented by the following men: B. B. Wood, Lusk, Rutherford, Harman, Forbes, Brittain. Trolove, and another, and Otago by Dr Ross, J. R. Park, 11. A. Salmon, 11. D. Stronach, 11. C. Smith, A. 11. Fisher, C. W. Rattray, and Brasch. The Christchurch men are exceptionally Strong, and will take a deal of beating, although Otago have a decided advantage by playing on their own course. To a stranger Balmaoewen is much more difficult than Shirley. A French lady, recently holding forth on the many dangers of the “New English Game” of golf, said: “A young man and a young woman might disappear on the golf links for a whole afternoon far from parental control, and heaven knows to what undesirable matches this might lead before the respective relatives have had time to find out whether, in fortune and family, they were suitably matched to one another.” Apart from those drawbacks, there can bo no question that the influence of “le sport” is steadily asoiting itself in French country life. The result of the Bogey match played by the St. Clair Ladies’ Golf Club on Tuesday was as follows : Hop. Mbs Fynrnore 18 1 down. Miss B. Glend'ining 12 5 down. Mrs W. J. Smith 17 6 down. A Bogey match was played at the St. Glair links on Saturday. The following arc the best cards handed in:— Gold Medal. Hep. A. Barrow 1 4 down. D. Hunter H 4 down. R. Forsyth 12 4 down. Silver Medal. F, J. Hooking 15 3 down. J. L. Hobbs 13 5 down.
