CAPETOWN, April 23. The Select Committee amended the Defence Bill by raising the age of compulsory training from 17 to 21. It abolished the capitation payment by citizens who are exempted by ballot, and provided for an aviation school, attendance at which will be preliminary to enrolment in the aviator corps. April 25. Speaking at a farewell banquet in his honour, Lord Methuen said' he believed that Lord Haldane shared his feeling that the British garrison in South Africa ought not to be reduced until the South Africans were able unaided to guard the country, occupying, as it did, such an important strategic position. April 28. An ordinance has been issued at Salisbury substituting a judge of the High Court for jury trial in cases of natives against Europeans and vice versa. The Minister of Justice (Mr Hertzog) withdraws his imputations and pays J3IGO and costs in settlement of Dr Ward’s action for a libel reflecting on the Free State Medical Council.
