MAX AND BOY DROWNED.
GISBOBNE, April 11. A man whose name is unknown and Gordon Brown (aged 14) and Fred Allen (15) were swept off the groyne at the entrance to the river while fishing this morning. The man disappeared, and has not been seen since. Allen was saved through life lines being thrown to him, which he grasped. An attempt was made to save Brown. Mr H.:witt Douglas, a dredge hand, jumped into the water and held on to him for 10 minutes. He had to let go, however, owing to the force of the seas, and the boy was drov.ned. Mr Douglas with difficulty regained the pier. The unknown man is about 30 years of age. Brown is a son of respected parents. Up till a late hour the bodies had not been recovered. The accident has cast quite a gloom over the town. April 12. The name of the man who was drowned yesterday is Leonard Goatley, aged 27 years. He recently came from England, and has no friends in New Zealand. Neiti.er of the bodies has been recovered.
