I On Friday afternoon a very large "At home " was given by Mrs Lawrence Simpson at the Art Gallery. The gallery, which had been made quite into a drawing room, wae beautifully arranged with little tables, at which tea was served, tthe principal flowers being yellow chrysanthemums and autumn leaves. High stands with bowls of flowers, as well as pot plants, were placed all about. In a comer of the room a band played many delightful selections during the afternoon. At another part ot the room delicious ices, grapes, fruit salad, and many dainties were heartily partaken of. Mrs Simpson received her guests in a handsome black siiSc trimmed with sequin embroidery, soft cream silk scarf, blue velvet toque with wings. A quiet wedding took place at the Roslyn Presbyterian Church on Thursday afternoon, when Misa Fanny Begg, daughter of Mrs A. C. Begg. Roslyn, was united in the bondb of hoiy matrimony to Mr Colin Holmes, youngest son of Mr James Holmes (Wairarapa). Miss Begg's wedding gown was composed of beautiful white satin, with very long train falling from the waist, lovely real lace berthe was draped across the bodice to the side of the skirt and caught on with a rosette of satin, white chiffon yoke finely embroidered with silver. Her soft lace veil was pinned to her hair with a bunch" of orange blossom. She carried a lovely shower bouciust, and woro a magnificent diamond pendant, the gift of the bridegroom. The bride was attended by two bridesmaids. —Miss Annie White and Miss Z. Ross, —both of whom woro dainty pule pink voile dresses over white satin. Their bodices were made with palo pink pleated chiffon fichus fastened at the waist with a deep pink rose; large black hats trimmed with pink roses. They carried glorious shower bouquets of pale pink and daik pink sweet pens with maidenhair fern. Mr Colin Holmes was attended by Mir Kebbell (Wairarapa) us best man. The wedding ceremony was performed by tiie Re. - Gray Dixon. After the wedding the guests adjourned to the home of the bride, where the happy couple receiv.d many congratulations and telegrams. Mr and Mrs Colin Holmes were the recipients of many beautiful and costly presents, as well as a number of cheques. Later in the day the happy couple left for the south. The bride's travelling dress was a smart palo grey velvet with hat to match. Mrs Begg wore a beautiful black silk robe trimmed with black embroidery and icliovod with touch of white lace, black hat ■with feathers; Miss Begg, beautiful royal blue cbarmeuso satin trimmed with passementerie, large picture hat. Afternoon tea was enjoyed in a. marquee, where the table was arranged with white flowers and maidenhair fern.

A most delightful afternoon "At home" was given by Miss Tomb© at Stuart Hall on Thursday afternoon to moot Dr Chapman and othor missioners. All tho nurs<fi, as well as the doctors, their wives, and many friends, had beeti invited to be present. Tho platform was very prettily decorated, with autumn leave,.! and flowers. Mr Alexander began with the singing, and afterwards a most appealing address was given by Dr Chapmnn, principally to tho many nurses present and the doctors. It is my duty this week to record the passing away of Mrs W. J. Cawkwell at the advanced age of 75. Dr Cawkwell (who has but just returned from England), -Mr W. D. Cawkwell (Taranaki), Mr C. A. Cawkwell (Remuera), Mrs C. T. Clayton, and Miss Cawkwell are all members of her family. Mrs Cawkwell's arrival here dates as far back as 1852, and with her death another of our oldest and most respected residents has passed from us.
