The cost of the railway line from Gisborne to Otoko has been £356,103. As the distance is 31i miles, that gives an average cost per mile of £11,305. In the case of the Otoko section the cost has been highest for this stretch, which extends for seven miles 67 chains, and involved an expenditure of £130,000. "Taking into account the time the national executive has been in existence," said Mr D. M'Laren at the conference of the New Zealand Labour party, " the work it has carried out has been a credit to the whole party. I am absolutely satisfied that the harvest is ripe and waiting to be reaped, in the matter of the formation of numerous branches throughout this country, and also for the formation of branches where we never had hopes before of forming branches. 1 ' When they get theee branches, he continued, it would give them a grip on the country and the politics that would make its influence widely felt.
