UNIVERSITY TOURNAMENT.

TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS. oteventh of thn series of annual in.-* ter-xmivcrsity tournaments is at present ii>

progress in Dunedin. The tennis championships were commenced at Kahuna on Saturday under ideal weather conditions. Each of tlie four colleges is represented by six ladies and four .men in this department, with the exception of Auckland, which has only two ladies playing tennis. In the Men's Singles L. S. Jennings, of Canterbury College, who has ■won this championship for the past four years in succession, beat Reynolds, of Auckland, without difficulty. T. D. Smith, of Canterbury, had an easy -win over Parker, of Victoria College; but Brown (Victoria) and Partridge (Otago) had a very even game. Parker just managed to very even game. In the second round Smith beat Parker, 6—3, 6 —3. Parker was completely outclassed in his match ■with Jennings, although he played a very plucky and good game in the circumstances. Tho inequality in size and reach of the players, however, put him at a great disadvantage. In the Men's Doubles Jennings and Smith, of Canterbury, again proved too strong for Campbell and Reynolds, the Auckland team. The match in \rhieh Partridge and Thompson of Otago defeated Brown and Roi* of Victoria College, was very evenly contested, and the third set was won 6—5. Decidedly the best game in the Ladies' Singles was that between Miss Tennent (Victoria College), and Miss Hunt (Otago). Most of the play was on the back line. At one time Miss Hunt had a lead of B—6, and required only one stroke to win; but she lost the set," 9—B. Tho majority of the other Ladies' Singles wero only of an ordinary nature. In the Ladies' Doubles the superior play of Misses Tennent and Cook (Victoria College) accounted for the Otasro's third pair—Misses Woodhouse and Jolly. Misses Hodges and Whitehead of Otago combined very well together in the first and second round, and put. up a very good fight against the superior play of Misses Cross and Jarnieson (Canterbury). Miss Cross's play particularly showed a great improvement. Only part of the first round of the Combined Doubles was decided on Saturday, win? being scored by Canterbury and Victoria Colleges.
