(Lult-Alannah) in Queens a d. Auckland meeting. The other ™£™* of the Highden team will go south in charge ° f M? H g R- of Auckland, owner of the SouJt-Lady Hester <»*> £*™J? Svdney to-day to attend the A.J.G. meeting galloped right-handed at Trentham, with a view to journey ng to Auckland to fulfil her engagement n the Oaks The news that Counterfeit will be sent north will probably bring about a change of plans for the Easter engagement* ; of the locally-owned filly. d_ bt o J W. Lowe's Maseotto (Skipper Ryan) returned from Sydney on \\ ednesday and the Trentham trainer scored a i n at Masterton the following unlucky three-year-old grey, fud bothei to Iranui). He beat four more landed candidates, and returned his supporters a good price. Lord Renown (a winner at W oodville and Dannevirke) was favourite, but failed to run prominently. J. H. fvossei took five horses to the meeting, but laded to score a win. Two members of the team acted as runnere-up in the principal events. The Birkenhead filly, Luge (who has recently been showing good form in hack company), ran second m the Marcn Handicap to the Taranaki-owned le Koti (St Paul—Nat a tor mare). C. Emerson rode Dirge, and also had the mount on St. Felix, when he was beaten in the \Vaipipi Cup by Mescal (Handsome JackMerope), a member of F. Tilley s lordcll team tliat ran without any luck at War.yanui and Dannevirke. Mescal runs in the ownership of Mr A. Leicester, who raced Meropo, a daughter of Soult. She met •with an accident at Carterton, where sue had an eye knocked out through colliding with a post, Weller (an apprentice of F. Tilley's) rode Mescal. Tilley also won tno Ruamahanga Hack Handicap with Nukuatu (Advance—Good Luck). The Kilcheran fitly Aloha (riden by B. Deeley) was favourite but could only get third. The Birkenhead gelding Negative, after limning third in the March Handicap, was saddled up again in the Welter, and sent out favourite. Ridden by Emerson, he only won by a head from Master Sylvia. The Ladies' Braoelet (for gentlemen riders) brought out a good field. The Hastings-owned Selfish (Birkenhead—Elfiock), ridden by Mr A. Hyde, "won from Prince Eddiic (Royal Fusilier—la), a promising sort, __ Te Roti was saddled up again for the Walter, but failed to get a place. The big field of 20 started in the Maiden Hack Race. The second favourite Daybreak (Birkenhead — <Eos) got the verdict. The winner was one of the yearlings sent to Sydney by the Hon. J. D. Ormond. He was purchased by Mr C. King, a patron of J. McLaughlin's, and scored his first wm for his new owner at Masterton. Goklsley (a member of Mr D. Buick's Awapuni team) was the least fancied of the 15 runners for the Dash Handicap, and paid a sensational dividend. He was lidden by Bell (an apprentice), who also scored on Daybreak Goklsley ran the five furlongs in the fast time of 60 2-sscc. Makara and Aratatia were the most fancied. The latter is a three-year-old by Achilles—Momokai, trained at Porirua. The Wanganui Trotting Club should have a record meeting on Easter Saturday and Monday, provided the weather is favourable. In tho seven events on the first day 156 horses were handicapped. The acceptances number 125—-an average of 18 per race. March 31. The Masterton meeting was concluded in fine weather. Tho Hawke's Bay-owned Merrimac (with B. Deeley in the saddle) was considered the best of the Grand Stand Hack Handicap field, but failed to get placed. It was a fast-run race, and Lord Renown (Renown —Stepdaughter) won from Glenfern. a consistent place-getter, and Mira, who was conceding the others 171 b. Naurnai scored his first win for Mr Whitney in the Telephone Handicap, five furlongs. Ridden by his old pilot (T. Pritehard), he galloped in his best style, and Won in lmin 1 3-ssec. The opposition was not strong. The public again went for Deelev's mount (Karoro) in the Scurry, but he failed to show up prominently. Miss Roberts (The Officer—Nioiti), runner-up on the previous day. scored in lmin 1 4 s=ec. Skipper Ryan rode the winner. Tho Hunterville sport who races as Tiemi Puru took the High-weight Hack Handicap (for gentlemen riders) with Tonev (Advance — Natator mare). He was ridden by Mr M. Bull, a son of the owner. Sinapis (winner of a double at Nelson) made her first appearance at the meeting in the Autumn Handicap. i_ne mile. She was made a better favourite than Golden Loop. who was considered unlucky to lose on the previous day. W. Ryan was on Golden Loop, who ran one of his best races, and put un lmin 41see—a record for the course. Sea Queen and The Rover are not quite read v. Allurement (W. Young) was sunposed to he the correct thine; for the Railway Hack Handicap, six fnrlontrs. She, improved on her previous day's form, but bumned up against Simple Sam (St. PaulFoul Shot mare), n double winner at Opunake on the 18th. Sam is a stable mate of To Roti. who scored in the next event. Effort (W. Ryan) was favourite, but the br>*t she could do was to run second. Tho publlo would not b« put offi Deeley, and «*nt Mis? Augusta (the cause of the trouble at Dannevirke) out favour'to for the Electric Hack Handicap. She did no better than that horseman's other mounts earlier in the day. Allure-

ment was saddled vp again, C. Jenkins having the mount. Snc again ran second, being beaten by Seapuki (Lethe —Waipuki). Nominations for the Wellington autumn meeting are very satisfactory. In the principal event, the Thompson Handicap, 45 horses are engaged. The Hawke's Bay Jockey Club dismissed ll.' Gray's appeal against his disqualification by the Dannevirke Jockey Club. This means that the successful rider will take 12 months' rest. The time will not bo wasted, as no doubt Gray will put it in to advantage-on his farm in the Taranaki district. Mr flighdon's horses for the C.J.C. meeting—Ermengarde Bronze, and Lockwood — were shipped south yesterday. W. Ryan will probably ride Ermengarde in the Challenge Stakes. C. Jenkins has been engaged to ride Boanerges in the Easter Handicap at Ellerslie. Jenkins rode To Roti when he won on the second day of the Masterton meeting. An effort is being made to bring about a match between Bronze and Counterfeit over a mile and a-quartor at the Wellington autumn meeting. Mr Highden has expressed his willingness to such a race, and Mr Whyte has written Sir G. Clifford Stating that the club is willing to give a 100guinea trophv for such a match. Counterfeit, dodged Bronza in f*.e Wanganui Cup, and side-tracked her at Riecarton. It is not considered likely that Sir George will agree to take on Bronze single-handed.
