APPLES FOR EXPORT.

INCREASED STATE SUBSIDY. (From Our Own Correspondent.) - WELLINGTON, October 9. A guarantee against lo6s on shipments of apples made next season from New Zealand to Europe has again been offered to exporters by the New Zealand Government. In an advice to Mr G. Witty, of this decision the' Minister of Commerce states that the maximum amount payable under the guarantee for the season's export hae been increased from £315 to £415, and the terms of the offer are the same as last season. The apples must be of varieties approved by the department's inspector, packed in Tasmanian or Peacock cases, and graded to the satisfaction of the department's inspector. The fruit must be shipped in cold storage, arrangements for shipment to and sale in Europe being made by the exporters, who must give facilities to the High Commissioner's officers for inspecting and reporting on the fruit on arrival and while it is on sale. The a.mount guaranteed to each grower will be the net return of Id per lb on the fruit forming hi 6 part of the shipment, but if the maximum amount of the guarantee does not yield Id per lb to each grower, it will be distributed pro rata according to the amount that would be due to each grower had the basis been one penny per lb without the total amount being limited. In calculating the amount to be deducted for expenses, New Zealand freights and wharf charges, and the cost of wrapping paper will be taken into

consideration, but the cost of the case and of the labour employed in packing will not be taken into account.

The price obtained for the asparagus offered at last market sales in Wellington constitute something considerably above the average, lib bunches bringing 3s 2d to 3s 7d. French beans also brought the fancy price of Is 3d per lb, and tomatoes 2s od per lb. The new potatoes offered realised 3d to 4d per lb.
