OTAGO UNIVERSITY COUNCIL.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) WELLINGTON, October 11. When the University of Otago Council Bill was being considered in Committee this evening, the Minister in charge (Hon. Thomas Mackenzie) moved to make the number of members appointed by the Governor two instead of four. This was agreed to. v The Minister moved similarly in regard to reducing the number of representatives to be elected by the graduates. Messrs G. M. Thomson and T. K. Sidey objected to the proposed reduction. Mr James Allen supported the proposal. The teachers, many of whom were graduates, were getting representation, and graduates would also be represented in the other groups mentioned in the bill, so that the graduates would be very well represented indeed. Dr Te Rangihiroa supported the views of Messrs Thomson and Sidey. Mr Allen said his only object was to get the number of the council down to a workable body. A body of 12 would be quite large enough. The proposal to reduce the representation of the graduates from four to two was negatived on the voices. Mr G. M. Thomson moved to amend sub-clause f by adding the board of governors of the Dunedin Technical School, so as to give them representation with the governing bodies of the technical schools. The amendment was negatived on the voices. It was decided to increase the number of the council by one member elected by the members of school committees, and by one member appointed by the Otago Hospital and Charitable Aid Board. The bill was reported, with amendments.
