DUNEDIN D.L.F. LITERARY AND DEBATING CLUB.

Motto: "Union is Strength" The usual weekly meeting of the above olub was held in the 'oluibroom last Tuesday evening, October 10. Present: Dot, the president, Indian Chief (in the ehair), and 16 members, including a new member to the club, Possum's Mate, to whom a cordial welcome was extended. The feature of the evening was a debate, "Has Labour-saving Machinery Been Beneficial to Humanity?" The subject, to say the least, was well worth hearing, some excellent views being brought forward by both sides. Happy Wag led for the affirmative side, supported by Texas Jack, Billy Barlow and Indian Chief; Roxana led off for the negative, supported by Possum. Although the affirmative side won by a largo majority, great credit is due to those who supported the negative for their plucky attempt at defence. —"Mock Drainage Board." — Next evening is to foe devoted to a "Moclc Drainage Board," a scheme, proposed by Billy Bur-low. Those taking part are: — Indian Chief, chairman; Billy Buriow, chief engineer; Possum, Thelma, Hiram Green, and Texas Jack—foremen of various sections of workers; Francis, town clerk. A really good and enjoyable evening has been promised, so roll up, comrades, and help to make it more enjoyable. —Next Debate.— The subject for October,24 is a debate, "Should Corporal Punishment be Abolished?" Adelina has volunteered to lead for the affirmative side and Billy But-low for the negative. < Don't fail to send in your papers for this debate, comrades. Remember, none too small, none too large.

As no more business needed to be transacted, the chairman declared the meeting closed.

Syllabus for ensuing term: October 17—" Mock Drainage Board. October 24.—" Should Corporal Punishment be Abolished?" October 31.—Open Meeting. November 7.—Paper on latest 'book you have read and remarks thereon. 14th a Mian Tell his Troubles to His Wife?" 21st.—tSocdal Evening. 28th.—Open meeting. Would country L.F. kindly contribute papers on any of the above subjects? All papers addressed to either Dot, the Secretary, or to members of club will be gratefully received. FRANCIS, Secretary. For starting of train, please watch daily papers. —Musical Instruments. — The committee would be very grateful to those who could take with them any musical instrument they may possess. —Catering.— The catering will be carried out in the usual manner. Girls, buckets and cups; boys, fruit and lollies. N.B.—Girls are requested to take, if possible, at least two cups along with them to the picnic. Tea, sugar, milk, and teacans are being provided for by certain members of committee'. —Programme.— Games, dancing, and music (to say nothing of meals) will be the leading items for the day. * _ .
