HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS.

SUCCESSFUL MEETING. The annual sports gathering of the Ofcago High School boys was held at Carisbrook on Saturday afternoon. A bitterly oolcl wind sweeping across the ground made tho conditions unpleasant for spectators and limited the attendance- almost .entirely to pupils of tho school and of the Girls' High School, with a few friends. About 3 o'clock a sharp rain and hailstorm came on, an«t though tho officials and competitors struggled on for a time, a short adjournment was agreed on. Rain fell again later, but tho meeting concluded in bright sunshine shortly after 5.30. Considerable interest attached to tho Challenge Cup content, for which, however, there were only two competitors — A. A. Haworth and W. T. Glasgow. Early in the afternoon Haworth gained a substantial lead in points, and concluded by winning tho championship by 22 points, as against 18 scored by Glasgow. The various events were got off vory rapidly, and the general arrangements wero complete and satisfactory. The spirit of good sportsmanship which is almost invariably to bo expected from boys in such contests was again a pleasing feature of tho gathering. Victory or defeat was always -accepted with the same imperturbable good humour, and the congratulations showered on the successful ones rose above considerations of personal feeling iii a way that should give a valuable ic-sson to older people in similar situations. During the afternoon tea and refreshments, provided by the school, were liberally dispensed by lady friends of the school to all-comers in the pavilion. Among the numerous officials who, with the teaching staff, worked to carry the proceedings through harmoniously special mention may bo made of the starter (Mr J. Banna), tho timekeeper (Mr J. Nelson), the press stewards (Messrs O'Shea and Tait), and the hon. secretary (Mr J. Reid), to whose energetic and tireless supervision the success of the gathering was largely due. There wero no very remarkable performances made during tho afternoon. The conditions were against that, but large fields and keen competition were the order in almost every event.
