SKIM-MILK OR WHEY?

TEST OF RESPECTIVE VALUES. The question of'the respective values of skim-milk, 'buttermilk, whey for pigfeeding is sometimes raised, each having its advocates. A test bearing on the point in question has been made at the Ontario Experiment Station^ Five groups of pigs were taken for the purpose of demonstration. To group one was fed about 2gjb of skimmilk to every pound of barley and frozen wheat, to which pollard was added. That was called meal, and every group got tho same meal. Group two was fed an equal quantity in pounds of buttermilk and meal. Group three was fed common cheese factory whey in place of skim-milk, and the same ration of .meal. Group four was fed whey that had been run through the separator to take out the butter-fat (threetenths of 1 per cent, per 1001 b, and meal as the rest. Group five was fed the 6ame quantity of meal and water for their drirak. The skim-milk gave the best results, and it required 254-lib of meal and 6281 b of skimmilk to make 1001 b gain- The buttermilk ran the skim-milk a neek-and-neck race. It took 2561 b of meal and 6311 b of skimmilk to make IOOLb gain. The ordinarywhey group rose to 2691 b of meal and 7471 b of whey to make 1001 b: gain. On separated whey it took 2971 b - of meal and 7741 b of whey to make lOOlb gain. On water and meal it required' 4301 b of meal to make lOOlb gain._ . This experiment sets up plain guide-posts as to the respective feeding value of these different forms "of liquid feed, when fed in conjunction with the meals spscified. Of course if maize meal had been fed in pa.rt the results' would probably have varied somewhat, but the comparison may be re-

yarded as a fairly accurate indication of the divergence in) value as a food of these residual products of the dairy and factory.
