INDUSTRIAL DISPUTE.

An industrial dispute has arisen between the Dunedin and Mpsgiel Woollen Mills' Employees' Union of Workers and Messrs Ross and Glendining and the Mosgiel Woollen Factory Company, and the parties having failed to arrive at a settlement, the dispute has been referred to the Conciliation Council, and is set down for hearing on October 5. Disputes in the woollen trade have also been before the Conciliation Council in Christchurch and Wellington, and in both instances they were referred to the Arbitration Court, with a view to obtaining a Dominion award. The same course will in all probability be followed in connection with the local dispute. The , reference filed by the local union of employees sets out, inter alia:—Forty-eight hours shall constitute a week's work. Overtime shall be paid at the rate of time and a-quartor for the first, four hours'time worked after the ordinary hour for ceasing the day's work. Time and a-half shall be paid for work done after the first four hours until starting time the next morning. Double time to be paid for work done on Sundays and on statutory holidays. The following holidays shall be observed : New Year's Day, Good Friday, Easter Monday, Labour Day, the birthday of the reigning sovereign, * Christmas Day, and Boxing Day. Male workers over the age of 21 years employed as wages hands to be paid the following minimum weekly rate of wages: Wool sorters, 635; wool store, 52s 6d; dryer and scourer, 52s 6d; dye house, 555; carders, 60s; carding room, leading hands, 555; carding room, other hands, 52s Cd; teasing room, leading hands, 555; teasing room, other hands, o2s 6d: spinners, 555; other hands in spinning room, 523 6d; milling-room hands, 52s 6d: finishing, 52s 6d; stock, 52s 6d; press, 52s 6d. Weaving room : Tuners, 635; warpers, 635; other hands, 52s 6d. Yarn storo: Pattern weavers, 635; yarn scouring, 52s 6d; other hands, 52s 6d. Engine room: Rope splicer, 60s; waggoners and carters to bo paid the rate now paid under th? Otago drivers' award, and shall not be expected to do watching; watchman, 48s; blacksmiths and fitters, 675. Night-work hands in carding and spinning rooms —■ namely, feeders and piecers: 16 to 19 years of age, 255; 19 to 20, 30s; 20 to 21, 375: over 21 years of age, 503. Boys and youth* on day work : 14 to 15 years of age, 10s: 15 to 16, 13s; 16 to 17, 16s; 17 to 18, 19s: 18 to 19, 225; 19 to 20, 265; 20 to 21, 37s Girls on weekly wage to bo paid: First year, 10s; second year, 13s; third year, 16s; fourth year, 20s; fifth year, Lss. All girls over the age of 21 years to receive not less than 27s 6d per week. In departments where the dual system of piece and time work is used, the rate of pay for females over the ago of 20 years shall be £d per hour for time work. The following rates shall be paid for piecework, which shall not be allowed in any department other than those mentioned, unless a log is first agreed upon between the union and the employer: Weaving, per cut of 48 ells: Flannels, plaidings, and one-shuttle work —Loom speed fixed per minute 80 to ,89, 2fd per pick, Id pea- porter; 90 to 99, 2-£d per pick. Woollen reeling department—All" 2-ply hosiery, 2d per reel; all 3-ply hosiery, 2d; single yarn, 2^d; all town yarn, 3d. Wool sorters —Merino fleece, 4s 6d per bale; crossbred fleece, 3s 8d; crossbred pieces. Is 3d per 1001 b; crossbred loose, 3s 8d per 2501 b; quarter-bred to be paid as merino. ■ The following provisions apply in respect of the Mosgiel Mills only :—Piecework statement: Darners—Worsteds, per lb; merinos, halfbreds, rugs,, and low saddles, |d.
