WAR VETERANS.

ONLY 39 ADMITTED. (From Ode Own Correspondent.) WELLINGTON, September 27. Thirty-nine claims for compensation for naval, military, or volunteer service* have been approved by the various stipendiary magistrates. The report by the Undersecretary for Lands on the inquiry ordered by the Government was presented to the House of Representatives this afternoon The number of claims received by the stipendiary magistrates ws 607 owhich 189 were from residents m Auckland, 63 WNew Pymouth,. and 62 from Notification was given that no claims would be considered from those persons who had previously land or money,: it being held that if a person had once received compensation the door should not again be opened benefit A number of .persons who had received land or money sent in claims, and some others who admitted having received a'grant for one service for consideration on account of militia, service. Any cases of this kind have not been recommended. Following is the list of the veterans whose claims have been recommended for consideration, the service of each being named:—James Allen, H--M Naw; Robert Baker, laranaki Volunteers; John H. Brown Hawkes Bay Volunteers; Edward A. H. Bullot, Taranaki Volunteers; JohiiCarter, 40th Regiment; Dennis Cotfey, 57th Regiment; John Collins, 14th Regiment; Charles Dearlove, Hawke's Bay Colonial Defence Force; William Edgecombe, Taranaki Volunteers; Robert Evans, Colonial Defence Force, Kai Iwi Cavalry, etc; Peter Fahey, 65th Regiment and militia Jdeceased; claim by his niece); John litzgerald, Wanganui Militia; Charles-Focett, 14th Regiment; Michael Hamilton, 58th Regiment (deceased; claim by his s^ter): William E. Hanlen, Auckland Rifles.; Henry Harper, Wanganui Volunteers; Charles Hesketh. Auckland Rifles ; Henry Hooker, Taranaki Militia; Henry Howell, Taranaki Volunteers ; James Kerr, Royal Artillery (deceased; claim by his daughter); William Kerr, Auckland Colonial Defence Force; Thomas Langman Taranaki . Volunteers ; James M' Auley, 14th Regiment; Esau Marsh, Taranaki Volunteers ; Joseph Neale Angus Nicolson, Auckland Naval Volunteers; Frederick B. Parkee, ■ Wanjwnui _Rifles ; George A Preece, Hawke's Bay Military Settlers' Defence Force, etc. ; Silas Pursiv Greytown Rifles; Richard Ross, Auckland Naval Volunteers; Thomas E. Shirley, Hawke's Bay Volunteers; Edmund St. Simpson, 70th Regiment; Henry Smith, Land Transport Corps; Arthur Standish, Militia; Robert Thelall, Hawke's Bay Mounted Troops; John H. Walker, Wellington Rangers, etc.; Vvilliam Walters, Waiuku Volunteers; Charles W. Wilson, Militia ; and John W. Wilson, 65th Regiment. The report contains an historical review of the measures taken formerly for the compensation of those who took paa-t in the several campaigns _or obtained grants under various legislative enactments. It shows that in the aggregate 7692 persons were compensated. When the report was presented this afternoon Mr Massey asked whether effect "would be given to the recommendations before the end of the year. Sir Joseph Ward replied that he would not make any statement until members had considered the report. If the other business permitted, he would submit proposals to the Hxxuse this session.
