SOCIAL AT EVANSDALE. *

One of the most successful ami most largely-attended gatherings held in connection with the old identities was held at Evansdale on Friday, 4th inst. Mr Roehfort, himself an old identity, acted as chairman, and opened the social with an appropriate speech, followed by an address from Mr Charles Duke (Dunedin) and Mr Allcock (Waikouaiti). The first part of the evening w;as devoted to musical items and songs, which were given by several ladies and gentlemen of the district. Thanks are due to Mr John Haggit and Mr Jago (both of Dunedin) for their contributions to the concert, their items being highly appreciated by everybody. Mr Rochfort then made the following presentations : —Gentleman's umbrella to Mr Jamesr Storey, the oldest gentleman present; lady's handbag to Mrs Stewart (Waitati), the oldest lady present; cruet to Miss Dobbin, being the best-look-ing daughter of an old identity resent; and an appropriate present to Mr Warren for being the most energetic member of the committee. About 400 people sat down to the feast which was provided by the committee in the l&rge dining-room of the private hotel. Those of the committee particularly worthy of thanks were Mrs Rochfort, Mrs Jones, Misses Richardson (2), Rochfort, M'Donald. Johnston, and Dobbin. Mr and Mrs R. Swan supplied excellent music, and Mr Richa.rdson made an efficient M.C. .Dancing was kept up till tho early hours of the morning, when one and all wended their ways homo, well pleased with their night's entertainment.
